# How to Prevent Ants Infestation in My Home

At some point, every homeowner undoubtedly experiences a pest invasion, with critters and crawlers such as spiders, ants, mice, or more making themselves comfortable inside a home —and a need for pest control in order to solve the issue in a safe and timely manner. Pest control itself is a broad topic that includes a variety of different methods and techniques for pest management, including preventative measures. If you encounter an ant infestation in your own home, don’t fret —simply read up on these tips on how to prevent infestations, handle them if they occur, and when it’s the right time to call for professional pest control assistance!
#### What Is Pest Control?
Pest control can come in a variety of forms, including mechanical, biological, chemical, and cultural controls. These different types of pest management help tackle different pest issues and effectively solve any pest-related issues. It’s important to understand that each potential pest infestation must be treated uniquely based upon the environment, type of pest, and other circumstances —that’s why it’s often best to leave pest control to a highly-trained professional with in-depth industry experience to help assist your specific issue. A trained pest professional can ensure that the pest problem is solved correctly and efficiently. However, by building up your background on pest management and preventative tips, you can help avoid pest issues from occurring in the first place or easily handle small issues on your own! Ants are a common type of pest that prefer invading kitchens and other areas with access to food supplies. Ants can contaminate food, spread disease, and leave behind pheromone trails that alert other ants in the colony of the food source’s location. Ants love the kitchen because the kitchen has such an abundance of food —spilled on the ground, in the garbage, or left unguarded in cabinets and pantries. #### Prevent Ants
The single best way to prevent an ant infestation in your home is to keep all of your floors and surfaces clean. Any crumbs or spills are like a beacon calling for ants to come crawling. Clean up dishes, sweep regularly, and wipe down all common surfaces. Make sure all food is sealed safely in containers. Another great way to prevent ants is to seal all entry holes around your property. If you see any active areas with ants, put out ant baits to kill scouts before the whole colony comes.

#### If Ants Come
If the preventive measures don’t work and the ants come marching in, there are a number of things you can do as a homeowner to solve the issue. Destroying the nest itself can also send ants scattering. However, once the infestation has begun, the best method of pest control is calling for help from a specialist. Pest control specialists will be able to determine what methods work best for your unique situation. Ants aren’t the only pests attracted to the tempting goodies to be found in your kitchen; in fact, there are a variety of other pests that flock to kitchens in order to search for food and safety. Other insects such as cockroaches, silverfish, and beetles also thrive in kitchen environments and love to feast on food and debris. Rodents will also search for food throughout your house, especially in your kitchen. Mice and rats can chew through containers in order to reach food and contaminate food sources.
